My name is Will Stephens. I was born in the United Kingdom, but grew up in Sonoma, California. I’ve been playing soccer since I was four years old, and when I graduated from Sonoma Valley High School I moved to Humboldt County to play goalkeeper at Humboldt State University. I graduated from HSU in the Spring of 2014 with a Bachelors in Communication. After a brief stint working construction in the San Francisco Bay Area, and having grown tired of the traffic, I moved back to Humboldt County and took up Oyster Farming as a profession. I worked for Taylor Mariculture, a Shellfish Seed Nursery operation on Humboldt Bay for the last 7 years. While there I managed the portion of the operation that dealt with the smallest oysters and clams at the Nursery.
I have always been passionate about Biology, and all things dealing with life. Most of my careers have been in fields related directly to Biology. My background is in organic farming, sustainable farming practices such as aquaponics and soil building, and aquaculture/mariculture. I keep both saltwater and freshwater aquariums, of the tropical and temperate varieties. I have a keen interest in microbiology and microbe husbandry and I maintain a sizable collection of brewers yeast and bacteria cultures. I also have a home garden where I grow berries, herbs, leafy greens, flowers and hops.
I love Humboldt County, and I plan for it to be my home forever. I live in Ferndale with my wife Taylor and our young son Mac. I am new to Academy of the Redwoods, but I am excited to learn and grow from what I already know to be an amazing community.
