Ten students traveled to Southern California to compete in the state competition of History Day. For the first time in AR's history, we had two projects chosen as finalists for their category: Alicia Giaimo for Senior Individual Exhibits, and the group of Gracelynn Trump and Chayslin Johnson for Senior Group Documentaries. These two projects were essentially chosen as being among the top 15 projects in their category in the entire state of California.

We also had two special award winners. Alicia received the Herbert Nikirk Visual Art in History Award for her exhibit, and Tori McConnell received the California History Award given by the Conference of California Historical Societies for her historical research paper.

All of our participants worked very hard and are dedicated. Each individual and group spent much time evaluating and adjusting their projects since first presenting at AR History Day. Some even attended coaching sessions at Humboldt County Office of Education and were even awarded scholarships to pay for their trip to Rocklin. Making it to the state competition is no easy task, these students dedicating a weekend of their lives to traveling and presenting their projects. They have all demonstrated adept research skills, time management, and the ability to not only speak in front of a panel of judges, but defend their arguments and provide evidence. All of which are essential skills of a historian. This group has raised the bar for Academy of the Redwoods in future History Day competitions.
