Academy of the Redwoods

Bruce began his education career teaching Physical Science and Life Science at Fortuna Union High School in the fall of 1988. In those early years he was fortunate to work with and receive guidance from an excellent teacher and mentor, Norm Dennis. Over a decade later he joins a group of visionary teachers that included Steve Irwin and Pam Barkdull who a year earlier created the school within a school program, Century Hall. Along with Steve and Pam, Bruce becomes a co-founder of the Academy of the Redwoods. Many of the principles that guide AR today were taken from the Century Hall model and the lessons learned from that experience. Today, Bruce teaches Biology and coordinates the Tier 3 Independent Study program for 3rd and 4th years.

Bruce has degrees in Biology and Forestry from Humboldt State University where he received his single subjects credential as well. He and his wife, Mary Jean, live in McKinleyville (Bruce dreams of moving to Montana when he retires). They have three grown children.
