My name is Alison Brewer, and I am embarking on another year at Academy of the Redwoods (AR). I am married with two dogs that I love dearly, and enjoy early morning walks as my form of meditation. I graduated from Humboldt State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on Earth Science after completing most of my undergraduate courses at Sierra Junior College in Rocklin, CA. After I graduated, I worked in the medical field for 5 years before being encouraged to teach by my friends and co-workers. (I still work in the medical field during my Winter and Summer breaks.) Since I was a senior in high school I have tutored math. I tutored both my peers and co-worker’s children to the point where I finally acknowledged that teaching was my calling. Though I love the natural world around us, I found that students sometimes avoid the sciences because of the math involved. I wanted to change that. AR has been an amazing place for me to learn, grow, and fine tune my practice; I truly enjoy my time here. I get to inspire extraordinary students to try their best, and I get the best compliments a math teacher could ever hope for. I am very grateful for this experience, and along with working with fantastic students, I get the extra bonus of working with an amazing staff.
